Acacia elachantha

    (Acacia elachantha)

Also known as: ?

This short-lived wattle grows to about 5 or 6 metres high with trunks to about 180mm diameter. I only know of one small patch of a.elacantha in the region growing on the roadside near Tieri, or at least it was until Ergon Energy flattened everything along the roadside and an over-zealous farmer obliterated what was left in a slash and burn clearing rampage along his fenceline! I'm hopeful there will be some regeneration but only time will tell!

The picture at right shows juvenile foliage, a more mature flowering specimen and a sample with green seed pods fully formed.

A juvenile specimen.
The timber is moderately heavy, close grained with a visible medullary ray. The staining in the sapwood of the sample pictured is due to weathering with the bark on as this sample was salvaged from a tree that had been cut down by Ergon Energy. There was surprisingly little cracking for a timber that was left exposed to the elements for several months.

Acacia elachantha machines quite nicely and sands much better than most short-lived wattles. The timber takes a finish easily and produces a sheen with little effort.
