Weeping Bottlebrush

    (Melaleuca viminalis)

Formerly known as: Callistemon viminalis

This tree has become one of the most propagated decorative trees on the planet thanks to it's lush foliage and abundant crimson flowers but it is native to Eastern Queensland where it is commonly found growing along watercourses and floodplains.

Usually grows to about 8 metres tall but can get much bigger, the trunks are generally around 300mm diameter.
The timber is moderately heavy and hard but machines well and moves a bit while drying. I suspected it would crack easily if roughed out green, so I soaked this bowl in detergent solution before finishing which worked well - only the tiniest of cracks right on the pith. The timber sands and finishes nicely with any type of treatment.
